Big Data Gothic and Digital Archaeology

Abstract

Purveyors of ‘big data’ tools and ‘big data’ solutions revel in the sublime terror of the algorithm. The self becomes sublimated, both as target of research and responsible actor behind the algorithm. In this talk, I wonder aloud about how archaeology and heritage more widely intersect with the perils and potentials of big data gothic, with these methods and techniques imported from data science, about what that intertwining does to us and our understanding of the past. Big data needs archaeology and heritage.
